  • Mavericks Announce 2026 Main Tryout Camp

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio — May 15, 2026 — The Columbus Mavericks are officially opening the door to the next generation of Maverick hockey players. The organization has announced its 2026 Main Camp, scheduled for Thursday, July 9th through Sunday, July 12th, at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center, Ohio. Players born between 2006 and 2010 are invited to apply for the chance to earn a roster spot on either the Columbus Mavericks NCDC or Premier team for the 2026-27 season. This year's Main Camp carries added significance. The Mavericks are entering their eighth season of competition in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) and, for the first time in program history, will field two teams — a Tier 3 Premier squad and a brand-new Tier 2 team competing in the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC). That means more roster spots, more opportunity, and more ways to be a Maverick. An Application-Only Process Main Camp operates on an application-only basis. Interested players do not pay a registration fee upfront — they must first submit an application through the Mavericks' website. The coaching staff will review all applicants and notify selected players approximately two weeks prior to camp. Registration fees are collected only after a player receives an invitation to participate. Forwards, defensemen, and goalies may all apply through separate registration tracks at no cost. This approach reflects the Mavericks' commitment to a thorough and intentional evaluation process — every player who steps on the ice at OhioHealth Chiller North in July will have earned the right to be there. What Selected Players Can Expect Players invited to Main Camp will receive a comprehensive evaluation experience that goes well beyond a standard tryout skate. The four-day camp includes one practice and skills session followed by three guaranteed games, with the possibility of a fourth game for players selected to participate in an All-Star game. Off the ice, players and their families will receive locker room and facility tours of OhioHealth Chiller North. The camp also features direct access to the Mavericks' leadership. Players will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with the NCDC and Premier coaching staffs, giving prospects a rare look at the program's vision and expectations from the people who will be behind the bench in 2026-27. Parents will have their own dedicated Q&A session with Mavericks President and General Manager Joey Recktenwald and Assistant General Manager Jaime Antello — an opportunity to ask questions, understand the program's culture, and learn what life as a Maverick family truly looks like. A Pivotal Moment for the Program Since their inaugural season, the Columbus Mavericks have built a reputation as one of the more player-focused programs in the USPHL's crowded landscape of 80-plus teams. The addition of an NCDC team for 2026-27 represents the most significant step forward in program history — and Main Camp is where it all begins. Players selected to the NCDC team will compete at the Tier 2 level against some of the top junior hockey programs in the country, with a direct pathway toward college hockey opportunities. Premier players will continue the Mavericks' tradition of competitive, development-focused hockey at the Tier 3 level in the USPHL. The Main Camp timeline flows directly into the Mavericks' broader summer calendar. The day after camp concludes, the organization will host its 2026 Charity Golf Outing at Glenross Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio — giving the extended Mavericks community a chance to come together and celebrate the start of a new chapter for the program. How to Apply Players born between 2006 and 2010 who are interested in competing for a spot on the 2026-27 Columbus Mavericks NCDC or Premier roster should submit their application at the link below. There is no cost to apply. Applicants selected to participate in the Main Camp will be notified approximately two weeks before camp. Applications are available now at: www.columbusmavericks.com/event-details/columbus-mavericks-main-camp-2026 For questions, contact the Columbus Mavericks at info@columbusmavericks.com. About the Columbus Mavericks The Columbus Mavericks are a proud member of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), entering their eighth season of competition in 2026-27. Based at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center, Ohio, the Mavericks will expand to two teams this season — a USPHL Premier (Tier 3) squad and a new NCDC (Tier 2) team — continuing the program's mission of developing players on and off the ice and growing the game of hockey across Central Ohio.

  • Columbus Mavericks Hire Former NHL Defenseman and Olympian Fedor Tyutin as NCDC Assistant Coach

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio — May 15, 2026 — The Columbus Mavericks are making it clear that their entry into Tier 2 junior hockey is no quiet step forward. The organization announced today the hiring of Fedor Tyutin as assistant coach of the Mavericks' inaugural National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) team. Tyutin, a former second-round NHL Draft pick who skated in 872 NHL games across a professional career that spanned nearly two decades, will join Head Coach Kyle Althen on the Mavericks' NCDC bench when the team takes the ice for the first time in September 2026. It is, by any measure, a significant addition — not just for the Columbus Mavericks, but for every player who will lace up in a Mavericks sweater this fall. "I'm really excited for the opportunity to join the Columbus Mavericks organization," said Tyutin. "Columbus has always been a great hockey city, and I'm looking forward to helping develop players and contributing to the Mavs' winning culture. Coaching is something I'm passionate about, and I'm grateful for the chance to work with Kyle, Joey, and the rest of the group. I can't wait to help the team continue to grow both on and off the ice." A Career Defined by Excellence at Every Level Born in Izhevsk, Russia, Tyutin was selected by the New York Rangers in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Before crossing the Atlantic, he honed his game in the Russian Superleague with SKA Saint Petersburg and Ak Bars Kazan, then turned heads with one standout season of major junior hockey with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League — where he led all Storm defensemen in scoring and earned spots on both the OHL and CHL All-Rookie Teams. His NHL career began in New York before he found his professional home in Columbus. Across stints with the Rangers, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Colorado Avalanche, Tyutin appeared in 872 regular season NHL games — a testament to the durability, compete level, and professionalism that defined his time as a player. During his years with the Blue Jackets — the longest tenure of his professional career — he became a cornerstone of the Columbus blue line and a respected veteran presence in the locker room at Nationwide Arena. On the international stage, Tyutin represented Russia in three consecutive Olympic Games — Turin in 2006, Vancouver in 2010, and Sochi in 2014 — and captured a gold medal at the 2008 IIHF World Championship. A Natural Fit Built on an Established Partnership Tyutin's path to the Mavericks' bench is a natural one. Following his playing career, he transitioned into hockey operations with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization before moving into coaching with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets, where he served as an assistant coach under the same Kyle Althen who will now lead the Mavericks' NCDC program. The two have an established working relationship, and that continuity matters when building a brand-new staff from the ground up. Mavericks President and General Manager Joey Recktenwald did not mince words about what Tyutin's hiring means for the organization — and for its players. "I'm excited about the opportunity to bring Fedor in to our organization," said Recktenwald, "but even more excited for our players who will reap the rewards of learning from a terrific coach and person." That player-first perspective is central to everything the Mavericks have built over eight seasons in the USPHL. When a player walks into the locker room at OhioHealth Chiller North this fall, they will have the opportunity to learn the game from someone who played it at the highest level — an 872-game NHL veteran who has competed on Olympic ice three times and knows what it takes to develop into a professional. A New Chapter for the Mavericks The Columbus Mavericks have spent seven seasons building a reputation as one of the more player-focused programs in the USPHL's Premier (Tier 3) division. The addition of an NCDC (Tier 2) team for 2026-27 is the most ambitious step in program history, and the Tyutin hiring signals that the organization intends to compete — and develop players — at the highest level the USPHL has to offer. The Mavericks NCDC team is scheduled to begin play in September 2026. Full roster and schedule information will be announced in the coming months. Players interested in earning a spot on the 2026-27 Mavericks NCDC roster should apply for the Columbus Mavericks Main Camp, taking place July 9–12 at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center, Ohio. Applications are available at www.columbusmavericks.com/event-details/columbus-mavericks-main-camp-2026. For more information on the Columbus Mavericks and the NCDC program, visit www.columbusmavericks.com or contact the organization at info@columbusmavericks.com or (614) 304-1601. About Fedor Tyutin Fedor Tyutin is a former NHL defenseman who appeared in 872 regular season NHL games with the New York Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Colorado Avalanche following his selection in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. A three-time Olympian representing Russia (2006, 2010, 2014) and 2008 IIHF World Championship gold medalist, Tyutin also played major junior hockey with the Guelph Storm of the OHL, where he earned OHL and CHL All-Rookie Team honors. He has previous coaching experience with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets. Fedor resides in Columbus with his wife, Sarah, and their three children. About the Columbus Mavericks The Columbus Mavericks are a proud member of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), entering their eighth season of competition in 2026-27. Based at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center, Ohio, the organization will field two teams this season — a USPHL Premier (Tier 3) squad and a new NCDC (Tier 2) team — continuing the program's mission of developing players on and off the ice and growing the game of hockey across Central Ohio.

  • Columbus Mavericks Name Kyle Althen First-Ever NCDC Head Coach

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio — May 15, 2026 — The Columbus Mavericks have named Kyle Althen the first head coach in the history of the club's new National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) program. Althen, a Columbus-based coach and player developer with deep roots in the Ohio hockey community, will take the reins of the Mavericks' inaugural Tier 2 team when it hits the ice at OhioHealth Chiller North in September 2026. The hire is a foundational one. Every program that endures is built on a first chapter, and for the Mavericks' NCDC team, that chapter begins with Althen. "I am excited to get to work with the Mavericks as their first head coach of the NCDC team," said Althen. "Joey and Jaime have done a great job building a winning culture with the Premier team over the past few seasons and I am excited to build on that with them and the rest of the staff." Mavericks President and General Manager Joey Recktenwald made clear that the search for the program's first NCDC head coach began and ended with someone who had already demonstrated the ability to develop players and win. "Kyle has an extensive track record of developing players and a proven track record of success," said Recktenwald. "I'm thrilled to have him on board and look forward to building a team that contends for national titles while developing players for the next step in their careers." Built in Ohio Hockey Althen's story is a distinctly Ohio one. A native of Cleveland, he played his high school hockey at Padua Franciscan in Parma before going on to play college hockey at the University of Akron, where he served as both team captain and team president — an early signal of the leadership qualities that have defined his coaching career. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports management from Akron in 2016. His path into coaching began in the junior ranks. Althen spent two seasons as associate head coach and director of scouting with the Oswego Stampede of the NA3HL, while simultaneously serving as a scout for the Amarillo Bulls in the NAHL. That dual role sharpened the talent evaluation instincts that have become a hallmark of his approach — the ability to identify not just what a player is, but what they can become. After relocating to Columbus, Althen joined the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets organization and spent seven seasons developing young players at the 14U and 15U levels. His most recent season with the program produced his most visible result yet: he led the 2010 birth-year team on a run to the Mid-Am District championship game in 2025. It was the kind of deep postseason run that speaks to both the quality of his player development and his ability to prepare a group to compete when it matters most. A Developer at His Core Althen's coaching work has never been confined to a single organization. For five years, he served as Hockey Director at Battery Hockey Academy, and he has continued to expand his footprint in player development through Althen Hockey Development — his own training and development operation that works with athletes from youth through the junior and college levels across Ohio and the Midwest. The breadth of that work reflects a coach who is as committed to the game between seasons as he is during them. That developmental philosophy aligns directly with the Mavericks' mission. Since the program's founding, Columbus has built its identity around giving players a legitimate path forward — not just a place to play, but a place to grow. Althen's entire career has been oriented toward exactly that kind of work. A Staff Taking Shape Althen will not be building the Mavericks' inaugural NCDC program alone. The organization has also announced the hiring of Fedor Tyutin — an 872-game NHL veteran, three-time Olympian, and Althen's former colleague on the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets coaching staff — as NCDC assistant coach. The two have an established working relationship, giving the Mavericks' first Tier 2 staff a foundation of familiarity and shared purpose from day one. Together, Althen and Tyutin represent a coaching pairing that is both experienced and player-focused — exactly the kind of staff the Mavericks had in mind when they began planning their expansion to the Tier 2 level. A New Era Begins in September The Columbus Mavericks enter 2026-27 as an eight-year-old program stepping into its most ambitious season yet. After seven years of competition at the USPHL Premier (Tier 3) level, the addition of an NCDC team represents a genuine evolution — a commitment to giving Central Ohio's top junior hockey prospects access to Tier 2 competition and the college placement opportunities that come with it. With Althen behind the bench, the Mavericks have made their intentions clear. This is not an organization simply adding a second team. It is an organization building toward national titles. The Mavericks NCDC team is scheduled to begin play in September 2026. Roster announcements and schedule information will follow in the coming months. Players interested in competing for a spot on the 2026-27 Mavericks NCDC roster should apply for the Columbus Mavericks Main Camp, taking place July 9–12 at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center, Ohio. Applications are available at www.columbusmavericks.com/event-details/columbus-mavericks-main-camp-2026. For more information, visit www.columbusmavericks.com/future-players or contact the organization at info@columbusmavericks.com. About Kyle Althen Kyle Althen is a Cleveland native and University of Akron graduate who spent seven seasons developing players with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets at the 14U and 15U levels, most recently leading the 2010 birth-year team to the Mid-Am District championship game in 2025. He previously served as associate head coach and director of scouting with the Oswego Stampede (NA3HL) and as a scout for the Amarillo Bulls (NAHL). He has served as Hockey Director at Battery Hockey Academy for five years and operates Althen Hockey Development, training athletes from youth through the junior and college levels. Althen resides in Worthington, Ohio.

That consistency helped the Mavs establish themselves as one of the most competitive teams in the Great Lakes Division. “This group has earned this opportunity,” said Head Coach and General Manager Joey Recktenwald. “Setting a new franchise record for wins is something our players should be proud of, but now the focus shifts. The regular season is behind us, and it’s about executing when it matters most.” Hosting a first-round playoff series at OhioHealth Chiller North provides Columbus with a familiar environment and the support of its home crowd — an advantage the team hopes to leverage in the opening weekend of postseason play. • Mavericks to Field NCDC Team Starting in 2026-27 Season

The United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) has announced that, beginning with the 2026 season, teams currently competing in the league’s Midwest, Southeast and Florida Divisions will compete at the NCDC and Premier levels.  This change represents a major modernization within the USPHL’s developmental structure and strengthens the NCDC’s position as a top development level for NCAA-bound junior players. This move aligns with the USPHL’s long-term vision of growing its Tier 2 and Tier 3 divisions side-by-side in its major markets.  More importantly, as part of this transition, the league will introduce the most comprehensive competitive and operational standards package in its history. These enhanced player development and operational requirements are designed to support our players, raise performance expectations of our best operators, and ensure all new and returning NCDC organizations meet the standards appropriate for Tier 2 junior hockey. “Junior Hockey is largely ungoverned and unsupervised in the United States, putting a greater burden on players to do their homework and on leagues to operate with integrity.  As a result, this operational change represents a major milestone in Tier 2 junior hockey in North America,” said Tony Zasowski , Deputy Commissioner of the USPHL.  “As the only true North American Tier 2 and Tier 3 junior hockey league, the NCDC and USPHL must and will continue to lead in player performance and developmental standards.  By supporting and elevating our best franchises into the NCDC, we believe the league continues to lead as the biggest and best Tier 2 and Tier 3 junior hockey league in North America.”   Under the updated standards, every NCDC organization must provide league-standard equipment and uniforms, long-distance travel accommodations, team meals, and other support essential for player development at the Tier 2 level.  Participating organizations will also be required to operate teams in both the NCDC and Premier Divisions, ensuring internal player advancement pathways and preventing competitive imbalance across the league. Additionally, all showcase scheduling will now be centrally managed by the league office to deliver consistent, high-quality matchups and balanced competition.  Teams in these divisions will no longer operate teams in the Elite division of the USPHL.   “This change represents a major investment by our top operators in the player experience and player development pathway,” said James Hunt, Special Advisor to the USPHL Commissioner, Competition Committee Chairman.  “We expect that this is the initial step in the evolution of a player bill of rights where prospective student-athletes considering junior hockey will be able to know exactly what they can expect from the USPHL and the NCDC in particular.” Teams Elevating to the NCDC in 2026-27 Midwest Division Chicago Columbus Mavericks Fort Wayne Spacemen Metro Jets Red River Spartans Florida Division Bold City Battalion Coral Springs Jr. Cats Florida Eels Florida Jr. Blades Tampa Bay Juniors Typhoon Hockey Club Southeast Division Carolina Jr. Hurricanes Charleston Colonials Charlotte Rush Hampton Roads Whalers Potomac Patriots Yorktown Admirals About the National Collegiate Development Conference The National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) is the Tier II junior hockey division of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). Established to provide an unparalleled pathway to NCAA hockey, the NCDC offers elite-level competition, professional coaching, and a proven track record of player advancement to NCAA Division I and III programs, as well as professional leagues. With organizations across the United States and Canada, the NCDC continues to set the standard for player development and exposure at the junior level.

It was a big win for our program, but we’re much closer to the starting line than we are the finish line.
