- Mavericks Announce Summer Youth Tournament Teams
The Columbus Mavericks of the USPHL Premier are proud to announce the first Summer Youth Tournament Series taking place two weekends in June. Teams will start with 8u and go through the u16 age group and will be sorted by birth year where applicable. The first tournament will commence June 6 th -8 th in Pittsburgh, PA, while the second tournament will be held in Niagara Falls, NY June 20 th -22 nd . “Entrants can expect two fun, and “hockey filled” weekends led by our coaching staff, players, and some amazing high-level players and coaches from local universities.” Explained Columbus Mavericks USPHL Owner and President Joey Recktenwald, who is excited about the opportunity. EYHA Vice President Aaron Pinion shares Recktenwald’s excitement about the opportunity, adding “EYHA is proud to further strengthen our partnership with the USPHL Columbus Mavericks through our summer youth tournaments. The summer tournament teams are just another example of our program's vision to build a true pipeline, focusing on skill development in a safe and fun environment for players aged 8 all the way up to 20. As we have already seen throughout the past three years with our partnership with the Columbus Mavericks, we expect to see skill development and the unique opportunity for our players to have access to Mavericks players, coaches and management that has truly strengthened our program and strengthened hockey in Columbus, which is our ultimate goal.” The tournaments will fall directly between EYHA’s spring and summer camps and on top of the benefits of high-level coaching, will be a great opportunity for players to be rewarded for their hard work in the offseason. “While we anticipate a large portion of players will be from EYHA, the teams are for any current or former Mavericks, or anyone who would like to have a first-hand Mavericks experience to learn more about our youth and junior programs.” Added Recktenwald. Families can sign up for one or both tournaments and will play at the level where they will be skating for the 2025-26 season. All players will receive a reversable Mavericks “Nighthawk” jersey to wear for the events. Participants can also expect “chalk talks,” video sessions, and special events during and leading up to the events. The summer tournament program is an excellent way to both further players skills while competing at a high level to get them jump started going into the next season so that they can excel on and off the ice. - Cavalieri Named USPHL Player of the Week
Photo Credit: Lily Little Mavs veteran forward, Caden Cavalieri has once again earned USPHL Player of the Week honors for the Great Lakes division after continuing to consistently put points on the score sheet. Cavalieri (‘04/Amherst, N.Y.) has been racking up the offense since the first games of September in the league, and he has not backed down. Most recently, in a three-game trip to face the Battle Creek Kernels and Fresh Coast Freeze, Cavalieri scored a goal in each match, including his first GWG of the season against the Freeze on Nov. 10. He has goals in each of his last five games. He also dished out five assists for an eight-point trip to Michigan, improving to 35 points in 17 games this year. He has 91 points in 83 career regular season games in the Premier Conference.
- Mavs Sweep Opening Weekend, Cavalieri Breaks Record
The Mavericks enjoyed a sweep for the second time overall and for the first time since the kickoff to the 2021-22 season, when they also picked up a pair of victories against the Cincinnati Jr. Cyclones, who were playing their first two games in their history. The Mavericks won 4-2 and 5-1 that weekend (Sept. 17-18, 2021). This is the second time in their six-year history that the Mavericks have played the first game of the entire Premier season. They also opened the Premier’s 2019-20 season, with the Mavericks playing their first-ever game on Sept. 6, 2019, taking a 5-1 loss to the Toledo Cherokee. The 12 goals in a weekend was the most for the Mavericks since they closed the 2022-23 season with seven and five goals, respectively, on March 4-5, 2023. Caden Cavalieri (’04/Amherst, N.Y.) started his third USPHL Premier season with three assists on Friday, then added four goals and two assists for his first career six-point game. He previously put up a 1-4-5 line last year as a member of the former Buffalo Stampede on Feb. 18. The six-point game tied the team record for points in a game with Colin Crowley, who put up a 3-3-6 mark on Feb. 5, 2023. Crowley is also the last Mavericks player to score four goals in a game, registering a 4-0-4 line on Dec. 11, 2022. Cavalieri’s nine points were the most for a single player on a USPHL Premier opening weekend. The new record pulls one point ahead of those set by Daniil Avdioukhin (DME Sports Academy, 5-3-8, 2018) and Hunter Berry (Charlotte Rush, 4-4-8, 2022).
