Weekend Preview: Toledo Cherokee

The Columbus Mavericks will kick off their 2020-21 USPHL Campaign this weekend as they take on in-state rivals, the Toledo Cherokee in a home-and-home series. The action kicks off this Friday, September 25th with the Mavericks' Home Opener at 7:30 at OhioHealth Chiller North. The second bout of the weekend matchup will see the Mavs travel north to play a Saturday evening game at the Team Toledo Ice House. Mavericks new Head Coach and General Manager, Nate Handrahan is looking forward to leading the team into their sophomore season after a solid inaugural campaign. “After a pretty hectic first season which saw us start the franchise, hire a staff, recruit players, play games all in the span of a few months, it has been a really productive summer, especially given our current circumstances with COVID-19,” said Coach Handrahan. “I would expect some of our returners to have an impact in our lineup starting with Deric Richison, who has tons of experience and is a dynamic player, and Keegan Hoover, who is our top-returning goal scorer. “A lot will be on their shoulders early while some of our young guys get going. Jordan Winrod and Colby Slate will look to play a fast, physical style and anchor our forward group,” added Handrahan. “Our back end is young with lots of upside and will be led by Braydn Krajicek, who plays an all-around game for us. “In net, Tyler Dorion returns from last season and is joined by two newcomers that round us out.” Toledo Head Coach, Kenny Miller is looking forward to an exciting season with a cast of returning veterans. While some potential returners are currently in Tier 2 junior camps, the Cherokee have locked down some returning vets including Caleb Williams, Bryce Davis, Zeth Stelmaszak and Mason Snyder. “Our Director of Player Personnel Nic Saenz has done a great job building this year’s team and has put a lot of work in getting some really good high-end guys to go along with our veteran players,” said Miller. Tickets for this Friday's home opener are still available but going fast.
