Mavs win shootout thriller against the Cyclones
GAME RECAPS
Lewis Center, Ohio – In an exciting game Friday night, the Mavericks defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones in the sixth round of a sudden death shootout.
7:10 into the first period, Cincinnati showed that they were not going to allow a repeat of their last appearance in Chiller North by scoring the first goal of the game. The Mavs were unable to even out the score, and finished the period behind the Cyclones, 1-0.
The Mavs weren’t backing down, though – veteran right wing Graham Wood scored his second goal of the season 4:28 into the second period, and captain Colin Crowley added a goal to the scoreboard 4:52 into the third period to put the Mavs in the lead, 2-1.
But Cincinnati was not ready to accept defeat, and they added their second goal to the scoreboard with 7:46 left in the game. Regulation ended tied, 2-2.
Both goalies kept the puck out of the net in 3-on-3 overtime, resulting in a best-of-3 shootout.
Cincinnati got their first two shots past Kyle Diehr, but Diehr managed to block their third. For the Mavericks, Crowley was the first up, but visiting goalie Blake Mitchell blocked his shot. However, both Carson Johnston and Brandon Kididis successfully sent their pucks into Cincinnati’s goal, leading to a sudden death shootout.
With fans from both teams on the edge of their seats, the goalies successfully blocked the shots from the first two skaters from both teams before Wood put the puck past Mitchell for the Mavs’ first shootout win of the season.
The Mavericks travel to Mount Clemens Ice Arena in Michigan to take on the Metro Jets on Friday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m.
