Mavs Battle in Two Close Losses

PLAYER SIGNINGS

Mavs Battle in Two Close Losses

The Mavericks battled hard in a home-and-home series against the perennial powerhouse Metro Jets, but fell just short, dropping two on the weekend. The series started at home on Friday night at OhioHealth Chiller North in Lewis Center. The Jets got off to an early lead with a goal at the 9:46 mark in the first period, scored by Conner Graham. A physical second period saw a number of scoring chances on both sides, but no goals as the scoreboard remained at 1-0 going into the second intermission. The Jets popped in an early third period goal to extend the lead to 2 just a minute and a half in. The third period saw more excitement and scoring chances and the Mavs looked to even the score by pulling the goalie in the waning minutes; however, the Jets sealed the 3-0 victory with an empty net goal with just under 2 minutes remaining. Rookie netminder, Alex Toth, had a stellar performance between the pipes, turning away 42 of the 44 shots he faced on the night, and improved both his GAA and save percentage stats.  After having the day off on Saturday, the Mavericks traveled north to Fraser, MI on Sunday evening for the second game of the weekend. The first period picked up where game 1 left off with physical play and plenty of scoring changes; however, as the buzzer sounded after 20 minutes, the score was tied at 0-0. The second period held more of the same, holding a scoreless tie until the 17 minute mark when the Jets’ Will Jentz scored the first goal of the game. The third period got more physical and saw more scoring chances, but the Jets extended the lead to 2 with a Nick Ceccarini goal at the 16:25 mark. The Jets would hold on to this lead to take the game 2-0. Tyler Dorion got the start in net and had another strong performance, stopping 37 of 39 shots. The Mavs are back in action this coming Saturday, October 24th with a single road game against the Wooster Oilers at 5:30 PM.
