GAME RECAPS

Mavericks Top the Oilers, Move to 30 Wins

With the 2021-22 regular season winding down, the Mavericks faced off against in-state rivals, the Wooster Oilers, this past weekend for a pair of games that would wrap up the season series between the two teams. In a home-and-home series dominated by the Navy and Green, the Mavericks would pick up a pair of victories and move to 30 wins on the season.

The series got underway on Saturday evening as the Mavericks made the 90 minute trip to Alice Noble Ice Arena in Wooster. The Mavs would jump out to an early lead as Tyler Isherwood scored the opening goal at the 9:43 mark, assisted by Thiago Jeronimo and Caleb Fifolt. Bailey Doust would extend the Mavs’ lead to two with his goal at the 11:39 mark, assisted by Anton Petrovskiy.

As the second period opened, Colin Crowley would extend the Mavericks’ lead to three at the 1:32 mark, assisted by Ryan Mackey and Dominic Conte. The host Oilers would get on the scoreboard at the 4:04 mark in the second period, cutting the Mavs’ lead back to two. The Mavericks would again extend their lead before the end of the second period with a pair of goals scored by Dominic Conte, assisted by Colin Crowley at the 7:42 mark, and Jack Williams, assisted by Brian Odstrchel and Chance Settles at the 13:17 mark.

The Oilers would open the scoring in the third period as they attempted to mount a comeback. Following the Oilers’ second goal, the third period would remain nearly scoreless, until the closing seconds of the game when Colin Crowley would score his second, unassisted goal of the contest to solidify the Mavericks’ 6-2 victory.

Zach Waizmann got the start in net for the Mavericks and stopped 25 of 27 shots to pick up the victory.

The series returned home to OhioHealth Chiller North on Sunday for an afternoon matinee. Still carrying momentum from his strong performance the night before, Colin Crowley opened the scoring for the Mavs in the first period with a goal at the 12:16 mark, assisted by Tyler Isherwood and Kevin Uhlir. Crowley’s goal would remain the only one in the first period.

The second period would see the Mavericks add a pair of goals to the score sheet. The first was scored by Dominic Conte at the 6:43 mark, assisted by Colin Crowley and Ryan Mackey. Just three minutes later, Colin Crowley added his second goal of the game and fourth of the weekend, assisted by Tyler Isherwood.

Nik Jozefiak would open the scoring in the third period for the home team, adding his name to the score sheet at the 13:25 mark, assisted by Chance Settles and Anton Petrovskiy. As the final seconds of the game ticked off the clock, Kevin Uhlir would score the final, unasssisted goal for the Mavs.

Frank Murphy would get the start in net for the Mavs, and post a perfect 12 saves on 12 shots in the first two periods. Alex Toth would come in to play the third period and carried the team to the shutout victory, stopping the remaining 5 of 5 shots he faced.

The Mavericks round out the regular season this coming weekend with a home-and-home series against the Metro Jets. The Mavs will travel to Mount Clemens Ice Arena on Friday night before returning home to OhioHealth Chiller North on Saturday night at 6:30 PM.
