Mavericks Sweep USPHL Detroit Showcase

The Mavericks put on both impressive offensive and defensive displays as they went a perfect 4-0 at this year’s USPHL Detroit Showcase in Fraser, Michigan. Over four games, the Mavs put up a combined score of 29-11 to top USPHL Midwest-East division teams Detroit Fighting Irish, Midwest Blackbirds, Motor City Hockey Club and the Metro Jets Development Program. 

The Mavs kicked off the weekend showcase with a Thursday matchup agains the Detroit Fighting Irish, posting an 8-6 win. Captain Deric Richison was the story of this game, notching 4 goals and an assist on the day. The Mavs jumped out to an early 2-1 first period lead with goals by Deric Richison, assisted by Graham Wood, and Jack Bortle, Assisted by Evan Halligan and Keegan Hoover. The second period was again dominated by the Mavericks, taking a 6-2 lead into the second intermission after goals from Deric Richison, Assisted by Isaac Jones and Keegan Hoover, Jordan Winrod, assisted by Braydn Krajicek and Deric Richison, as well as two more unassisted goals by Richison. The Fighting Irish came out of the gate hot in the third period, scoring four back-to-back goals and tying the game at 6 a piece. Not to be denied, Evan Halligan answered back with an unassisted goal for the Mavericks to retake the lead. The Mavs iced the game with an empty net goal by Will Kididis, assisted by Isaac Jones and Colby Slate.

Alex Toth got the start in net, stopping 17 of the 23 shots faced on the afternoon. 

Day two of the Showcase saw the Mavs face a double header against two more Midwest-East division teams. They started off the day with a morning contest against the Midwest Blackbirds, coming away with an 8-2 victory. The two periods were all Mavs with goals scored by Jack Bortle, assisted by Keegan Hoover and Evan Halligan, Jordan Winrod, assisted by Evan Halligan and Deric Richison, Tim Kramer, assisted by Shane Cassin, and Tim Kramer, unassisted. The Mavs opened up the scoring in the third period with four more goals by Tim Kramer, assisted by Trevor Scherer, Keegan Hoover, assisted by Jack Bortle and Tyler Hall, Max Williams, assisted by Jordan Winrod and Deric Richison, and Jack Bortle, assisted by Keegan Hoover and Evan Halligan. The Blackbirds popped in two late third period goals to round out the final score at 8-2. Tyler Dorion got the start in net and stopped all 10 shots he faced during the first 58 minutes of the game.

Rookie Drew Donahue got a few minutes of the action in the closing minutes of the game and gave up 2 goals on the remaining shots faced. 

The second game of day two saw the Mavericks facing off against the Motor City Hockey Club and coming out on top with a 10-1 victory. The first period saw two Mavericks goals, scored by Trevor Scherer, assisted by Keegan Hoover, and Isaac Jones, assisted by Tyler Dickerson. The second period was again dominated by the Mavericks with 5 goals, scored by Colby Slate, assisted by Isaac Jones and Colton Heery, Tim Kramer, assisted by Jordan Winrod and Evan Halligan, Shane Cassin, assisted by Tim Kramer, Deric Richison, assisted by Tim Kramer, and Evan Halligan, assisted by Nik Jozefiak. Motor City opened the third period scoring with their lone goal of the game at 8:49. The Mavs answered back with the three remaining goals of the game, scored by Jordan Winrod, assisted by Tyler Dickerson and Deric Richison, Deric Richison, assisted by Tyler Hall, and Marcus Cornett, assisted by Shane Cassin and Trevor Scherer.

Alex Toth got his second start of the weekend in goal and picked up the win, turning away 17 of the 18 shots he faced. 

The Mavericks final game of the weekend turned out to be their most closely contested as they faced off against the Metro Jets Development Program. After a close back and forth battle, the Mavs came out victorious with a 3-2 win. The Mavericks kicked off the scoring with a power play goal by Tim Kramer, assisted by Deric Richison just before the 9 minute mark and would take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Max Williams widened the scoring deficit with a goal, assisted by Tyler Dickerson half-way through the second period. The MJDP would answer with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2; however, that score wouldn’t last long as Tim Kramer netted his second goal of the game just 33 seconds later, assisted by Tyler Dickerson. The third period was closely contested, but the Mavs held the MJDP off to secure the 3-2 victory.

Tyler Dorion was back in net for the Mavericks, stopping 27 of 29 shots. 

The Mavericks are back in action this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Pittsburgh Vengeance. They will play at Pittsburgh on Friday night and return home for a 7:00 PM Face-off on Saturday, October 10th.
