This past weekend saw another installment of what has become a heated in-state rivalry between the Mavericks and the Wooster Oilers. After two physical contests, the Mavericks were able to add two more wins to their record. The home-and-home series kicked off in Columbus on Friday night. Looking to make an early impression, the Mavericks’ offense came out firing on all cylinders, and putting up four goals in the first 20 minutes of play. Danny Beebe scored the first two goals for the Mavericks, assisted by Sam Adler and George Zimmerer on the first, and Mike Campbell and George Zimmerer on the second. Noah Staten was next on the scoresheet, with a goal assisted by Hayden Ripley and Nik Jozefiak. Deric Richison rounded out the first period scoring with an unassisted goal at the 18:53 mark.  The Mavericks would extend their lead to five in the middle of the second period, with a goal by Ethan Bishara, assisted by Phil Angervil and Tim Kramer. Although the Mavs would mount more scoring attempts, including a goal that was called off, the Oilers would stop the bleeding, leaving the Mavericks with a 5-0 victory. Alex Toth got the start in net and earned his first career shutout, stopping all 23 shots he faced. The Mavericks hit the road on Saturday evening for a rematch against the Oilers at Alice Noble Ice Arena in Wooster, OH. With hopes to even the series, the Oilers came out strong in the first period and held the game to a 0-0 tie after 20 minutes. The Mavs would open the scoring just 25 seconds into the second period with a goal by Phil Angervil, assisted by Ethan Bishara and Tyler Dickerson. Keegan Hoover would follow that up just four minutes later with a goal assisted by Phil Angervil. After the Oilers scored to cut the lead back to one, Ethan Bishara scored the Mavs third goal of the night, assisted by Phil Angervil and Tim Kramer. Wooster would score one more goal before the end of the second, to give the Mavs a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission. George Zimmerer would kick off the Mavericks’ third period scoring with a goal assisted by Tim Kramer just before the five minute mark. Wooster would once again answer back to cut the Mavericks’ lead back to one. With the clock winding down, the Niagara Falls, ON native, Phil Angervil would tally his second goal and fourth point of the night, assisted by Tim Kramer, to put the game on ice. Zack Waizmann got the nod between the pipes for the Mavericks and turned away 28 of 31 shots in the contest. The Mavs are back in action this weekend as they hit the road for a pivotal 2-game series against the Lake Erie Bighorns, who are just one spot behind the Mavericks in the Great Lakes division standings.
