Mavericks Split Weekend Series

After several weeks off for the holidays, the Mavericks kick-started the 2021 portion of the USPHL season with a two-game home series agains in-state rivals, the Wooster Oilers. After a rusty start and loss on Friday night, the Mavs bounced back on Saturday to secure the weekend split. The series kicked off on Friday night at OhioHealth Chiller North. The Oilers would jump out to an early first period lead with goals by Trevor Stokes and Sebastien Smith. The Oilers would open the scoring in the second period as well, posting two more goals before the half-way point. The Mavericks would answer back late in the second period with a goal by rookie defenseman, Graham Wood, assisted by Noah Staten. The Mavs would close the gap in the third period with a goal by Noah Staten, assisted by George Zimmerer at the 13 minute mark. The comeback would fall short; however, as the Oilers would hold on to the lead to take the game 4-2.  Tyler Dorion got the start in net on Friday, stopping 23 of 27 shots faced. Looking to answer back from Friday’s loss, the Mavs came out firing on all cylinders on Saturday. Marcus Cornett would open the scoring just under 3 minutes into the game with a goal assisted by Deric Richison and Tyler Dickerson. Danny Beebe would extend the Mavs lead as he scored just 4 minutes later, assisted by Noah Staten and Jordan Winrod. The Oilers would score late in the first to cut the Mavs’ lead in half going into the first intermission. The second period was a repeat of the first as the Mavericks would outscore the oilers by a tally of 2-1. Will Kididis added the Mavs’ third goal just 3 minutes in, assisted by Sam Adler. 5 minutes later Jordan Winrod would score his first of two goals on the evening, assisted by Danny Beebe and George Zimmerer. The Oilers’ Will Holden would cut the Mavericks lead to 4-2 going into the second intermission with a goal at the 10:30 mark. Jordan Winrod would seal the Mavericks’ victory as he scored his second of the night at the 13:52 mark, assisted by Sam Adler. Zach Waizmann got his third start of the season between the pipes and would pick up the victory, stopping 15 of 17 shots in the contest. The Mavericks are back in action this weekend with road games against the Metro Jets on Friday and Toledo Cherokee on Saturday, and then returning home to OhioHealth Chiller North to face the Cherokee on Sunday.
