Mavericks Fall to Cherokee in Inaugural Home Opener

The Columbus Mavericks opened their inaugural USPHL season in front of a standing-room-only crowd at Ohio Health Chiller North arena on Friday. Facing a veteran-heavy Toledo Cherokee team, the Mavericks lost a physical battle, 5-1. The first goal in Mavericks franchise history was netted by Edmond, OK native, Isaac Jones, with an assist by Keegan Hoover. The Toledo Cherokee goals were scored by <span style="text-decoration:underline"><span style="text-decoration:underline"><a href="https://www.usphl.com/view#/player/6151/50/zeth-stelmaszak" target="_self">Zeth Stelmaszak</a> (2), Matt Gilbert (1), Caleb Williams (1), and Tyler Fox (1), with assists by Matt Gilbert, Caleb Williams, Bryce Davis, and Mitchell Dickman. Mavericks rookie goaltender, Hayden Hoover, had a busy night in between the pipes, facing 51 shots, while veteran netminder, Chad Simmerman, stopped 34 of 35 shots. The Mavericks take the road next weekend for a two-game series against fellow expansion franchise, Lake Erie Bighorns, on Friday, September 13th and Saturday, September 14th.
