Mavericks Fall to Cherokee

The Mavericks faced off in a single-game home stand against in-state rival, Toledo Cherokee this past Friday. After keeping it close for the first half of the game, the Cherokee opened up the scoring by out-shooting the Mavericks by 24 shots, eventually securing a 7-1 victory. The game opened up with a physical and closely matched first period, marked by stellar goaltending by the Mavericks’ Hayden Hoover. After the first 20 minutes of play, the score was tied 0-0. The stalemate was broken; however, midway through the second period with the Cherokee’s first goal, scored by Bailey Byrd. Paavo Sammalisto and Ben Mitchell netted two more goals to finish the second period off with the Cherokee leading 3-0. The Cherokee came out firing in the third period and widened the scoring deficit to 7-0 with goals by Reese Boehm, Bailey Byrd (2), and Nate Brown. The Mavericks ended the shutout hopes for Cherokee goalie, Mason Snyder, Edmond, OK Native, Isaac Jones popped in a goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation, assisted by A.J. Kandel and Jared Matley. Mavericks goalie, Hayden Hoover got his 10th start of the season in net, stopping 52 of 59 shots he faced on the evening. The Mavericks are back at home this Saturday (11/9) and Sunday (11/10) against the Lansing Wolves. Both games are at Ohio Health Chiller North with a 7:45 face-off on Saturday and 11:20 AM puck drop on Sunday.
