Mavericks Drop Two in Road & Home Weekend

The Mavericks dropped two games in a split road and home series this weekend against two tough Great Lakes division rivals, the Toledo Cherokee and Metro Jets. The Mavericks were on the road on Friday Night at the Team Toledo Ice House in Toledo, OH. The Cherokee displayed their offensive fire power, defeating the Mavericks 12-0. The Cherokee’s Bailey Byrd netted a hat trick, while Anthony Weinrich, Paavo Sammalisto, Matt Gilbert, and Ben Mitchell each scored two goals for the Cherokee. Mitchell Dickman rounded out the Cherokee goal scoring with the final goal in the third period. The Cherokee outshot the Mavericks, 52-15. Hayden Hoover got the start in net for the Mavericks, stopping 29 of 36 shots during the first two periods, before Jonathon Szekeres came in to start the third period, stopping 11 of the 16 remaining shots. The Mavericks returned home to Ohio Health Chiller North on Saturday to face off against fellow Great Lakes division powerhouse, the Metro Jets. The Mavericks again faced a barrage of shots as the Jets outshot the Mavericks 57-11, on their way to a 10-0 victory over the Mavericks. The excitement ramped up near the end of the second period, as the Mavericks’ Tyler Riddle was awarded a penalty shot, which was stopped by the Jets’ Will Augustine. Luke Bell got the start in net for the Mavericks on Saturday night, stopping 34 of 43 shots he faced during the first 41 minutes of play. Hayden Hoover came in in relief early in the third period, stopping 13 of the remaining 14 shots on the night. The Mavericks are back at it this weekend, with a two-game home series against fellow expansion franchise Fort Wayne Spacemen, on Saturday, October 26th at 8:30 PM and Sunday, October 27th at 11:30 AM.
