PLAYER SIGNINGS

Columbus Tops Wooster

The Columbus Mavericks traveled 90 miles north to Wooster, OH on Saturday to kick off the in-state rivalry series with the Wooster Oilers. With the Mavericks joining the USPHL in 2019-20 and the Oilers returning to the league after a one-year hiatus, the young teams were both looking to draw first blood in the rivalry. After a physical battle, the Mavericks came out on top in the first matchup, walking away with a 6-2 victory. The Oilers would strike first with a goal by Sebastian Smith late in the first period and would take that lead into the first intermission. The Mavericks came roaring back in the second period with back-to-back goals, scored by Ethan Bishara, assisted by Jack Boatel and Nik Jozefiak, and Isaac Jones, assisted by Marcus Cornett. The Oilers’ Zach Henry would answer back half way through the second period to tie the game at two a piece. Just one minute later; however, the Mavericks would regain the lead with a goal scored by Jordan Winrod, assisted by Keegan Hoover. While the third period saw more physical back-and-forth action, the goals were all on the Mavericks’ side of the scoreboard. Marcus Cornett struck first with a goal at 4:24, assisted by Captain, Deric Richison. Keegan Hoover would add a 5th goal at the 14:36 mark, assisted by Isaac Jones and Ethan Bishara. As the third period wound down and the Oilers pulled goalie, Luke Bell, the Mavericks’ Dylan Flesher would seal the deal with an empty net goal at 19:28. Rookie netminder, Alex Toth, had another strong performance, turning away 29 of the Oilers’ 31 shots on the night. The Mavs are back in action this weekend with a two-game home stand against the Metro Hockey Club.
