Weekend Preview: USPHL Detroit Showcase

The Mavericks will travel to Mount Clemens Ice Arena this weekend to play in their first Showcase of the young season. Over the course of three days, the Mavs will match up against four non-conference opponents from the USPHL Midwest-East division. Read on to take a look ahead at this weekend’s matchups.

The Mavs will kick off their weekend with a single game on Friday against the Motor City Hockey Club with a 1 PM face-off. Motor City is currently in 5th place in the Midwest-East division with a 1-2-2-0 record and comes into the showcase weekend on a 1-game win streak. Rookies Demian Tychenko and Ethan Lida lead the team in scoring with 11 and 9 points respectively, while Max Hetman leads the team’s netminders with a 0-1-1 record, .899 save percentage and a 6.85 GAA.

Saturday will be the busy day for the Mavs as they have two afternoon matchups. The first of their two games is at 1:30 PM against a strong contender in the Metro Jets Development Program (MJDP). The Jets are currently in 2nd place in their division with a 5-1 record, riding a 5 game winning streak into the showcase. Keep an eye out for rookies Robert Grasso (7-5-12) and Carson Finney (3-8-11) as well as veteran Nick Twombley (4-8-12) who lead the team in scoring. Goalie Freddy Soderberg as been strong in net for MJDP with a 3-0 record, .980 save percentage and an impressive .33 GAA.

The Mavs’ second matchup of the day will see them facing off against the Decatur Blaze at 7:30 PM. The Blaze are currently at the bottom of the Midwest-East division with a 1-4 record. Third-year veteran Walker Smith leads the team in scoring with 2 goals and 2 assists while Randon Striplin, who was acquired from the Ogden Mustangs, has been strong between the pipes with a 3-1 record, .927 save percentage and a 2.50 GAA.

The Mavs will round out their showcase weekend with a Sunday afternoon game against the Detroit Fighting Irish at 3 PM. The Fighting Irish are currently 4th place in their division with a 2-1 record and come into the weekend on a 2-game winning streak. Third-year veteran forward, Garrett Benoit leads the team in scoring with 3 goals and 2 assists, while goalie Alex Herman has back-stopped the team with a 1-0 record, .895 save percentage and a 4.71 GAA.
