Mavs fall just short in pair of nailbiters
GAME RECAPS
Toledo, Ohio – On Thursday night, the Mavericks traveled to Toledo to face off against the Cherokee, the Great Lakes Division Leaders.
For most of the first period, both teams kept their players out of the penalty box and the puck out of the net - Matt Scott served the only two minutes for tripping, early in the period at 3:27.
With twenty seconds left on the clock, however, a play that saw the puck pass from Brendan St. Julian to Jadon Beard to Cameron DeForest allowed the Mavericks to take the lead, 1-0.
The Mavs kept their lead throughout the second period, but Toledo tied up the score at 1:26 into the third.
The tie remained for the rest of regulation, but just 40 seconds into 3-on-3 overtime, the Cherokee scored on Brendan Cobb to take the win, 2-1.
Overall, the game was light on penalties, with the Mavs only clocking in 8 penalty minutes to Toledo's 11. Goalie Cobb saved 43 out of 45 goals for his third highest save percentage of the season, a 0.956.
Lewis Center, Ohio – The Mavs returned home to OhioHealth Chiller North on Friday night to face off against the Metro Jets for their seventh matchup of the season.
The Jets finished the first period with a 2 goal lead, before the Mavs found a stabler footing.
With assists from Beard and David MacDonald, Hunter Gentz scored the first goal for the Mavs, 7:33 into the second period, to set the score 2-1. Within the minute, though, the Jets quickly regained their insurance goal, and the period continued 3-1 until the final minute, when the Jets solidified their lead at 4-1 on a power play.
39 seconds into the third period, the Jets added their fifth and final goal. At 2:41 and assisted by Bryce Kolpien, USPHL rookie Gentz scored his second goal of the game for a final score of 5-2.
The Mavericks host the Cincinnati Cyclones at OhioHealth Chiller North in their seventh matchup on Friday, February 3 at 8:15 p.m. before travelling to the Heritage Bank Center for a Sunday 1 p.m. game.
