Mavs continue to improve, battle hard, but fall short to Jets, Cherokee
GAME RECAPS
Lewis Center, Ohio – On Friday night, the Mavericks hosted the Metro Jets for their eighth matchup of 2022-23.
The Mavericks had their strongest start yet against the Jets, holding them off the longest that they have this season. While the Mavs weren’t able to score, goalie Brendan Cobb blocked all 15 of the Jets’ first period shots, to finish the first period scoreless.
The Mavs continued to hold off the Jets for much of the second, until a scrum by the net put the teams on a 4-on-4 play and the Jets scored their first goal with 2:13 left on the clock.
Not to be deterred, Colin Crowley scored his 21st goal of the season on assists from Carson Johnston and Daniel Schmidt to tie the score up at 1-1, 5:13 into the third period.
That tie wouldn’t last long, however, as the Jets added their second goal of the night at 8:00 into the third. While the Mavs succeeded in keeping their players out of the box and the puck out of the net for the rest of the night, the final regular season matchup between the Mavs and Jets ended with a final score of 2-1.
Toledo, Ohio – The Mavericks continued their weekend with a road game in Toledo.
The Mavs had a rough start not quite sending the puck into the net, while the Cherokee scored one goal in the first and two in the second, to finish the second period with a 3-0 lead. Both teams racked up roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
The rough play continued into the third period, with two players from each team receiving disqualifications and major fighting penalties at 9:22.
Johnston scored the sole goal for the Mavs on an assist from Crowley on a 4-on-3 to set the score 3-1, 12:32 into the third period.
The Cherokee scored their final goal on an empty net, to finish the game 4-1.
After a brief break next week, the Mavericks will play the Cherokee in a home-and-away series, starting Friday, February 24 at 8 p.m. in OhioHealth Chiller North.
