The Mavericks continued their December road trip this past weekend as they headed north to Lansing, MI to take on USPHL Great Lakes division rivals, the Lansing Wolves. After two hard-fought and exciting contests, the Wolves came out on top, winning 6-5 on Friday night and 3-2 on Saturday. The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in Friday’s game, scoring two unanswered goals in the first period. The Mavs opened the second period scoring with a goal by Isaac Jones, assisted by Jack Wrightsel, just two minutes in. The Wolves quickly responded with a goal just two minutes later to regain their two-goal lead at 3-1. The Mavericks popped in back-to-back goals at the ten minute mark in the second period, the first scored by Mitchell Gillespie, assisted Keegan Hoover and Trevor Kraska, while the second goal was scored by Colby Slate with an assist by Keegan Hoover. The Wolves would score two more goals before the end of the period to go into the second intermission with a 5-3 lead. The Mavericks again came out firing in the third period with a goal by Jared Matley, assisted by Colby Slate and Trevor Kraska just 1:44 in. Eight minutes in, Mitchell Gillespie would score the Mavericks’ final goal of the game, tying the score at 5, with assists from Jordan Winrod and Braydn Krajicek. The remainder of the third period saw numerous back and forth scoring opportunities before the Wolves netted the game-winning goal with 6 minutes to go. They would hold onto the one-goal lead to take the win 6-5. Hayden Hoover was in net for the Mavericks on Friday, stopping 32 of the 38 shots he faced. The Wolves came out firing on all cylinders in Saturday’s game and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Mavericks answered with a goal by Jack Wrightsel, assisted by Trevor Kraska and Jared Matley to start off the second period. After a physical second period, the Mavs would go into the locker room for the second intermission trailing 3-1. Jared Matley would draw the Mavericks one goal closer at 15:12 in the third period, assisted by Trevor Kraska and Jack Wrightsel. The offensive push in the third would fall just short unfortunately, as the Wolves would hold on to win 3-2. Luke Bell got the start for the Mavericks on Saturday, turning away 28 of the 31 shots he face. No rest for the weary, the Mavericks will be on the road for the third weekend in a row as they travel north to play four games in three days at the USPHL Chicago Showcase. The Showcase will be an opportunity for the Mavericks to face off against teams outside of their division as they will play the Decatur Blaze, Detroit Fighting Irish, Minnesota Mullets, and Rum River Mallards.
