Mavericks Return to USPHL Playoffs
The Columbus Mavericks wrapped up their second USPHL regular season this past weekend, finishing their sophomore year with a .500 record of 21-21-2. There will be little time to reflect on the regular season; however, as the Mavs look forward to the first round of the Great Lakes divisional playoffs. In a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, the 4th place Mavericks will face off against the 5th place Lake Erie Bighorns.
Head Coach & GM, Nate Handrahan is looking forward to his first playoff appearance at the helm for the Mavericks. “Playoffs is such a special time of year. Everyone is 0-0 with a chance and what you do with it is up to you. We certainly have to prove we are worthy every night.”
In what is shaping up to be a physical and exciting first round series, the Mavericks will be taking on a fellow second-year team in the Lake Erie Bighorns. Over the course of this season, there has been no love lost between the teams, who faced off in four regular season contests. And while the Bighorns hold the advantage with a 3-1 record over the Mavericks, all four games were tightly contested, with two going to overtime and no game with more than a two-goal disparity in final score. The parity between the two teams was echoed by Handrahan. “Our division is super competitive and our matchup with Erie is no exception. They got the best of us in the regular season so we will have our work cut out for us.”
The Mavericks will have home-ice advantage during this opening series, hosting the first and third games on Friday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 12:00 PM, while the Bighorns will host the second game. Both home games will be played at the OhioHealth Ice Haus in downtown Columbus. You can purchase tickets to both home games at www.columbusmavericks.com/tickets.
